CALABASAS, CA., April 12, 2025 — AmaWaterways has launched AmaMagdalena, the first luxury river cruise vessel to sail Colombia’s storied Magdalena River, marking a significant expansion for the company and a milestone for tourism in the region.
The inaugural sailing took place on April 12, drawing attention to a river that has long been central to Colombia’s history but remained largely untapped by the global cruise market.
“Our expansion into Colombia represents a new chapter for AmaWaterways and for the world of river cruising,” said Rudi Schreiner, the company’s co-founder and chief executive. “We are proud to be the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena River, a region that until now has been largely inaccessible.”
Carrying up to 60 guests, AmaMagdalena was custom-built in collaboration with Colombian artisans and designers to reflect the culture and landscape of the river communities. The ship’s design, led by architect Camilo Restrepo, emphasizes natural materials and regional craftsmanship. Staterooms, ranging from 237 to 516 square feet, feature AmaWaterways’ hallmark twin-balcony layout and were designed by Barranquilla-based interior designer Marianna Schlegel Donado. Woodwork throughout the ship was handcrafted by the Cartagena firm Ocean Projects.
Onboard amenities include a sun deck with a pool, a spacious fitness center, a main restaurant offering Latin American and international cuisine, and a more intimate al fresco dining space.
The ship will sail two seven-night itineraries — *Magic of Colombia* and *Wonders of Colombia* — between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Highlights include a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, a guided tour and jazz performance in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Mompox, birdwatching excursions featuring rare endemic species, and a cultural visit to Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas. Optional pre- and post-cruise land extensions are available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.
“The launch of AmaMagdalena is more than bringing our guests to a new destination,” said Kristin Karst, co-founder and chief brand ambassador. “It’s about creating lasting connections between cultures and offering new opportunities for the communities who call the Magdalena River home.”
The project has been supported by ProColombia and local stakeholders with a focus on sustainable tourism. Initiatives include workforce training, infrastructure development, and partnerships aimed at preserving the ecological and cultural heritage of the region.
“The arrival of AmaWaterways in Colombia reflects a deep trust in our country’s potential,” said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia. “The Magdalena River will now serve as a stage for showcasing our traditions, biodiversity, and warm hospitality.”
Later this year, AmaWaterways plans to launch a second ship, AmaMelodia, to further expand its presence along the Magdalena River.
