Last night the Academy Award for Best Picture was awarded to the film Green Book.
Written by Nick Vallelonga, Brian Hayes Currie, directed by Peter Farrelly, and starring Mahershala Ali, who also received the award for Best Supporting Actor and Viggo Mortensen; Green Book, tells the story of a classically trained African American concert pianist who hires an Italian American New York nightclub bouncer to drive him through the Deep South for his concert tour. The film is loosely based on the real life friendship of pianist Dr. Donald Shirley and Tony “Lip” Vallelonga. The film’s title refers to The Negro Motorist Green Book (also known as The Negro Travelers’ Green Book), created and published by mail carrier (and later travel agent), Victor Hugo Green in 1936.
